It is my favorite time of year again. It is Sour Cherry-Mastic season, that little window of time when sour cherries come into the market and pop out with their exuberant bright pinky reds. Though Mastic is not a seasonal fruit or vegetable, I essentially pretend it is one when it is sour cherry season, because the two things go together like the moon and stars. We are one of the few ice cream shops in New York that makes Mastic ice cream, and many people ask us for it year round. Although it is my favorite flavor of all time ever, I have been restraining myself from putting it on tap for a several weeks now, in the approach of the sour cherries. We will have Mastic on tap for at least one week, as well as Mastic & Mahlab, which is the pit of a wild cherry. It has a delicious bitter almond flavor, which is why we love to pair them together. This year we have two milkshakes with sour cherries in them. The first is our Sour Cherry Mastic milkshake with honey, pistachios, mastic soft serve (while we have it), and of course, sour cherries. The second is our Cherry Almond Vanilla milkshake with toasted almonds, cherries, and vanilla. If you like cherry anything, this is your moment!
